Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that periodically lives on the skin and mucous membranes of healthy people. Occasionally S. aureus can cause an infection. When S. aureus develops resistance to the beta lactam class of antibiotics, it is called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Mandatory and standardized reporting of MRSA has been introduced for all Ontario hospitals to monitor rates, establish trends and inform best practices to help the health care system reduce the risk and prevent the spread of this infection. This site provides health care professionals with hospital indicator reports as well as practical resources to put effective infection control measures in place. Read more facts about MRSA and find out about the rates of infection in Ontario hospitals. Resources
