Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus (VRE) Enterococci are bacteria that live in the gastrointestinal tract of most individuals and generally do not cause harm ("colonization"). Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are strains of enterococci that are resistant to the antibiotic vancomycin. If a person has an infection caused by VRE, such as a urinary tract infection or blood infection, it may be more difficult to treat. Mandatory and standardized reporting of VRE has been introduced for all Ontario hospitals to monitor rates, establish trends and inform best practices to help the health care system reduce the risk and prevent the spread of the disease. This site provides health care professionals with hospital indicator reports as well as practical resources to put effective infection control measures in place. Read more facts about VRE and find out about the rates of infection in Ontario hospitals. Resources
