The Evolution of LHINs Continues
Since their launch in June, 2005 as 14 corporations under The Corporations Act, the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) have been actively working on business start-up, board recruitment and community engagement activities. Business Start-Up
The ministry continues to work on finalizing the preparation of office space and start-up infrastructure for LHINs. It is expected that all 14 offices will be ready for occupancy by December 1, 2005. A complete list of offices, addresses and phone numbers will be available in the December LHINs bulletin. On September 19, 1-800 numbers were launched for the LHINs. Since that time, more than 900 calls have been received. As well, the LHINs web site was launched on October 17 at www.lhins.on.ca and an intranet is expected to be in place by the end of November. Search firms are working with the LHIN CEOs to hire four initial staff for each LHIN. The positions are: Senior Director of Performance, Contract and Allocation; Senior Director of Planning, Integration and Community Engagement; Executive Assistant and Office Manager. It is expected that these positions will be filled by December 2005. Community-Based Nomination Process to Recruit Board Members
The LHIN boards have initiated a community-based nomination process to identify and recommend the final three board members for each LHIN to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. As part of that process, the LHIN boards established nominating committees and hosted 59 public information sessions in 46 cities, with 1,088 people in attendance. Approximately 350 applications have been received by the Public Appointments Secretariat. LHIN board recommendations are due to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care by November 25. Ongoing Community Engagement
LHIN boards and CEOs continue their community engagement activities through stakeholder meetings and many presentations at local and provincial conferences and events. Proposed Legislation to Support LHIN Roles and Responsibilities
Legislation will be needed to enable LHINs to perform certain functions that are envisioned as they evolve toward their mature or end state. The government intends to introduce legislation this fall to reflect the change of the ministry's roles and responsibilities and the roles of LHINs. For more details about the proposed LHIN roles and responsibilities, please see Bulletin 11/May 2, 2005 on this web site. Please look for the LHIN Bulletin mid-month, every month. Also, LHIN-related updates and reports will be posted at www.health.gov.on.ca/transformation at the beginning of every month, if necessary. |
