Ontario Paediatric Surgical Wait Times

Paediatric surgical wait time data is being released for the first time in Ontario. Soon even more information will be available for Paediatric surgical wait times.

The data below does not include all facilities that perform paediatric surgery in the province. This wait time data has been collected through the voluntary submission of five paediatric facilities in Ontario :

  • The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto)
  • Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (Ottawa)
  • McMaster Children’s Hospital (Hamilton)
  • Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario (London)
  • South Eastern Ontario Health Sciences Centre (Kingston)

It is important to know that these "waiting times" may include "medically appropriate" or "planned" waits and as a result may be artificially high. Sometimes, when a surgery is scheduled, children are too sick to have surgery, and sometimes children must grow older before their bodies are ready to undergo surgery. These important and medically necessary waits are determined by a child’s clinician.

Those days of "appropriate" waiting are included in the current data, and may artificially inflate waiting times. As we work to build a paediatric module for the Ontario Wait Time Information System, these "appropriate" waits will be monitored, and will be removed from the reported waiting times.

To better understand the data on this website, how it was calculated and its limitations, please read the Understanding Wait Times section.

5 out of 10 Patients Treated Within (Days)

The point at which half the patients have had their treatment, and the other half are still waiting. Unlike the average, the median will not be influenced by one or two very unusual cases (long or short), and is therefore more stable over time.

9 out of 10 Patients Treated Within (Days)

This is the point at which 90% of the patients received their treatment and the other 10% waited longer.

Volumes

The number of reported paediatric cases.

NOTE : Data as of April 2009 excludes surgeries performed at Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. This exclusion is due to the hospital not yet going live on the Wait Times Information System (WTIS)
