Ontario Contingency Plan for the Management of Blood Shortages - Version 3

The purpose of the Ontario Contingency Plan for the Management of Blood Shortages and the Ontario Hospital Toolkit for Emergency Blood Management is to:

  • ensure a standard and equitable approach to managing low blood inventory throughout the province, consistent with the National Plan for the Management of Shortages of Labile Blood Components
  • outline the provincial response to a blood shortage
  • describe communication processes, including how national recommendations are communicated and monitored during a blood shortage
  • assist Hospital Emergency Blood Management Committees (HEBMCs) to develop Hospital Emergency Blood Management Plans
  • provide tools that HEBMCs can use during a blood shortage
  • educate hospitals to assist them in meeting certain standards of practice and regulatory requirements
