Prenatal HIV Screening Program

The MOH's Prenatal HIV Screening Program encourages the increased uptake of HIV testing during pregnancy. Testing can dramatically reduce the risk of an HIV-positive pregnant person transmitting the virus to her baby.

Health care providers have an important role to play in helping their patients understand the importance of HIV testing in relation to pregnancy. We recommend that health care providers in Ontario discuss and offer HIV antibody testing to all pregnant persons and those planning pregnancies. As part of the program, health care providers who have not requested HIV testing on the prenatal testing requisition form will receive a reminder letter from Public Health Ontario indicating the importance of prenatal HIV testing as an important HIV prevention method.
