Subject

New Provincial Identifier Code for Billing of Medical Claims for Services Provided to Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador

In October 2002, Canada Post changed the official provincial identifier code for Newfoundland and Labrador from “NF” to “NL”.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has updated the claims payment system to reflect the provincial identifier code “NL” on all outgoing data, regardless of whether incoming data is submitted using “NF” or “NL”.

Effective with the December 2003 Remittance Advice, claims submitted for Reciprocal Medical Billings (RMB) for physician services provided to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, will appear on the provider’s RMB Remittance Advice with the provincial identifier code of “NL”.

All output for reciprocal medical billings for physician services provided to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador will be reported with the new provincial identifier code “NL”. Remittance Advices and Error Reports will reflect the new provincial identifier code “NL”.

For a period of 6 months, the claims payment system will accept input data with both the new provincial identifier code “NL” and the previous provincial code identifier “NF”.

A further communication will be sent to notify providers when the old provincial identifier code for Newfoundland and Labrador (“NF”) will no longer be accepted by the claims payment system.
