Minister’s Expert Working Group on Narcotic Addiction Report

Ontario has the highest rate of prescription narcotic use in Canada, and misuse of or addiction to prescription opioids of grave concern in many Ontario communities.

In March 2012, the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care convened an Expert Working Group on Narcotic Addiction to provide advice to the Ontario government on strengthening addiction services and treatment, with a focus on prescription narcotic misuse and addiction.

The Expert Working Group had broad representation from clinicians, addiction service providers, First Nations community members, and people with lived experience of narcotic addiction.

The Expert Working Group submitted a final report that contains 47 recommendations to strengthen the following five areas of focus :

Based on advice from the Expert Working Group, on October 17th, the minister announced $15 million in new investments to increase access to opioid addiction services and treatment across the province.

Working with Children and Youth Services, Aboriginal Affairs, Health Canada and others, the ministry will continue to address the immediate consequences of opioid addiction and respond to emerging changes in narcotic use.
