Ensuring timely and appropriate access to high quality health care in rural and northern communities is a challenge. That’s why the government committed to create a Rural and Northern Health Care Framework – a guide to address the unique health care needs of the almost two million Ontarians who live in rural, remote and northern areas of the province. A Rural and Northern Health Care Panel was appointed to assist in the Framework’s development. The Panel is made up of health care providers and administrators who are familiar with the access challenges faced by rural and northern communities.
The Panel has released a report that identifies a vision for the Rural and Northern Health Care Framework and contains 12 recommendations for consultation.
A health care framework is a guide to address the unique health care needs and challenges of rural and northern communities. The Ministry will build upon the work done by the Panel as well as the feedback from the public consultations to develop the framework. The ministry is also consulting with Local Health Integration Networks and other key stakeholders in the development of the framework.
The framework will seek to address existing and future challenges by developing strategies that respond to the issues raised by the Panel as well as the public. It will be used to support future policy development and decision-making around health care in rural and northern areas of the province.
As part of the development of the rural and northern health care framework, the government obtained public feedback through a series of public regional round table discussions and online consultations.
