Health Information Protection Act, 2004
![]() The Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004 (PHIPA) which comes into effect November 1, 2004, creates rules for the collection, use and sharing of personal health information by "health information custodians" , such as doctors, pharmacists and other health care providers. PHIPA also gives patients rights around access to their health records and how their health information is used. To ensure that health information custodians know what is expected of them under the legislation, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care organized information sessions across Ontario for health care professionals and stakeholders. One such Information Session was taped in Toronto on October 20, 2004.
